Te Whare Tapa Whā

Te whare tapa whā, he whare oranga.
A house with four walls is a house of wellbeing.

Te Whare Tapa Whā is a way of thinking about your health and wellbeing. It looks at how the different parts of your life are connected and how they can affect each other. These different parts are called pou – they are…

  • Taha tinana – your physical health
  • Taha hinengaro – your mental and emotional health
  • Taha whānau – your social health
  • Taha wairua – spiritual health

Looking after all four pou will help you be like a strong house with four walls providing stability and support.

You could talk to a friend about what these might be – maybe you have some ideas that are unique to you and your interests and hobbies.

Think about a time when you felt like you were winning in every part of your life. You were getting on well with your mates and whānau, you were doing well at work, you felt strong and healthy and you were generally just happy.

Chances are, all aspects of your life were in balance and working together smoothly.

Now think about a time when you weren’t getting on well with your whānau or mates… you were worried about a fight, you lost sleep, you didn’t feel rested or happy and your wairua wasn’t strong.

We rely on strength in our walls to keep our whare strong and supported. Without these walls, our whare will crumble.
