Building My Foundations – Kia rite
The Career Hauora resource is designed to scaffold learning and career action each year, providing students with practical tools, activities and information to:
- Reduce career anxiety
- Prepare students for life after school
- Empower our young people to live their best life
At Year 9 students are preparing for the journey – kia rite (get ready). The focus is on identity and creating a vision for the future. Students also gain an understanding of the importance of school in building the foundations for their career.

Overview
In this unit students are introduced to careers, career hauora and become an active participant in their own career journey. The first part of the career journey involves helping students identify who they are, where their strengths lie, and how their current role as a student and the skills and knowledge they will collect along the way is building the foundations for their career ahead. Kia rite = get ready!

In this unit, students/Akōnga are encouraged to build skills and capacity to create connections that will shape their own career journey. This part of the career journey involves helping students to look for existing and potential connections and how their ability to engage positively in the wider community experiences around them, is building the foundations for their career ahead.
